You gotta leave the house ‘cos the landlord wants you out you need a little hand so you’re giving me the shout I know that when we parted we’d agreed that we’d be friends but carrying your furniture is where the friendship ends. Darlin’ that’s too bad, but it’s a no-can-do Darlin’ that’s too bad, but it’s a no-can-do I guess you should have thought of that when I was still in love with you. You used to laugh with all your friends saying I was just no use layin’ round the house never fixing what was loose imagine my surprise at the nature of your call turns out that you think I might be useful after all. Darlin’ that’s too bad, but it’s a no-can-do Darlin’ that’s too bad, but it’s a no-can-do I guess you should have thought of that when I was still in love with you. Your friends are out of town and you don’t know what to do someone’s got to take the cat for just a day or two I know how hard it was to get your dresser up the stair if you remember baby I’m the one that got it there. Darlin’ that’s too bad, but it’s a no-can-do Darlin’ that’s too bad, but it’s a no-can-do I guess you should have thought of that when I was still in love with you.

Well the man he checks my status, he tells me what he’s found I wanna tell him, don’t mind me friend…. how long will you still be around? Fingers in my pocket, fingers in my pocket fingers in my pocket every day. The cost of living gets so high, I can’t even afford to die Fingers in my pocket, fingers in my pocket every day Won’t you tell me, oh my children, where to find the money tree don’t know why I wait for the answer, you all know so much more than me Fingers in my pocket, fingers in my pocket fingers in my pocket every day Vote for this one, vote for that one ain’t no difference I can see no matter which one get my thumbprint only one result will be Fingers in my pocket, fingers in my pocket fingers in my pocket every day.

Well it was a black day, the day you came over the hill and it was a black day, oh I feel it still Hair of gold, against a blue sky my time is done for all that you deny. Come the summertime, you’ll be on my mind on my mind. I was on the shore, he was coming out Looked him in the eye, saw there was no doubt It was dirty lie that you told him true on the other side, he’ll wait for you Come the summertime, you’ll be on my mind on my mind. See the ragged crow in the winter sky feel the cold wind blow, see you in my mind’s eye it was dirty lie, that you told me true On the other side I’ll wait for you Come the summertime, you’ll be on my mind on my mind.

My father went to sea all his life, like his father before him I followed in their footsteps though I’m the first one that can swim. Never made much money, you could say we are the little guys Now they say we’ve got to pay because the seas are running dry No fish today for you or for me, the government man say we can’t go to sea Sorry my children I’m sorry my wife they took away my quota they took away my life they took away my quota they took away my life Up in the city they talk so fine, saving the planet one day at a time taking whatever steps that they can, that cuts no ice with your Japanese man It’s the big companies had it all their own way what I catch in a year, they catch in a day and I know it’s the law but I can’t abide throwing my bycatch over the side No fish today for you or for me, the government man say I can’t go to sea Sorry my children I’m sorry my wife they took away my quota they took away my life they took away my quota they took away my life I don’t what it is they expect us to do, look for an answer in the sea so blue It’s problem no-one cares enough to fix, you can’t teach this old dog any new tricks Saw a picture in the paper the other day, of the man with the biggest quota they say dressed as fine as a man could be, he lives two hundred miles from the sea! No fish today for you or for me, the government man say we can’t go to sea Sorry my children I’m sorry my wife they took away my quota they took away my life they took away my quota they took away my life

Lay your aces down Martha, lay your aces down it’s not the time for you to tell your tales all over town Like a fox that’s on the run, you’ve been run to ground the table calls to see you Martha..just lay your aces down. You know you had so much from me, counted for nothing at all tell me is it worth just a little more, with your back against the wall. Had yourself an easy run, were you bluffing all along? The table calls to see you Martha..just lay your aces down. It’s the winter of your discontent now, nothing else is heaven sent now gonna have to find yourself something else to do Nowhere left to turn now, no bridges left to burn now could it be the best thing that ever happened to you? Lay your aces down Martha, lay your aces down it’s not the time for you to tell your tales all over town Like a fox that’s on the run, you’ve been run to ground the table calls to see you Martha..just lay your aces down.

Charlene 04:13
You said you went round to your mom, but I went by and I never saw your car, oh no you say you feel it in your soul and I can hear the band playing but that’s not a song, and I know that it’s not love that’s not a song, and the spirit…well it has moved on Charlene, you know it’s over baby Charlene, don’t make me crazy Charlene, you know it’s over and it’s time to say goodbye. You said that you were working late, and the switchboard it was down you say there is nobody else and I can see your lips moving but that’s not a song, and I know that it’s not love that’s not a song, and the spirit…well it has moved on Charlene, you know it’s over baby Charlene, don’t make me crazy Charlene, you know it’s over and it’s time to say goodbye. You say that he is just a friend, I think I know just what you mean you say feel it in your soul and I can hear the band playing but that’s not a song, and I know that it’s not love that’s not a song, and the spirit…well it has moved on Charlene, you know it’s over baby Charlene, don’t make me crazy Charlene, you know it’s over and it’s time to say goodbye.

It's Tough 02:56
Give her everything, everything that her heart desire now she even wears my ring, but everyday it’s still the same No matter what I do, she’s always wanting something new and It’s tough, it’s tough, yes it’s tough when all you’ve got is not enough. I know she like the bright lights, one day she’ll run away for ever to where the band plays through the night, and the dancing goes on and on no matter what I say, one day she’s gonna run away and It’s tough, it’s tough, yes it’s tough when all you’ve got is not enough. I tell her she must try to understand, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon I try my best to be a richer man, but I can’t buy her the moon. All my friends they say, I don’t know when I’ve got it good no they’re not the ones, the ones who pay, I just want it understood that she may be heaven-sent, but she’s out there spending the rent and It’s tough, it’s tough, yes it’s tough when all you’ve got is not enough

Car Trouble 03:23
There seems to be a new sound, it doesn’t sound like good news I thought I’d worked it out but something’s just come loose Looks like I’m in for some car trouble, car trouble. Drive now pay later, in my mind was no doubt The road stretched out before me til the luck ran out and it looks like we’re in for some car trouble yes it does darling, car trouble And I feel the wheel is shaking, deep down something’s breaking your love your love your love is just like car trouble. Does nothing in a man’s life turn out right wanna see wanna see a ray of sun at no extra cost well darlin we had a map but now I think we’re lost and it looks like we’re in for some car trouble, car trouble and I feel the wheel is shaking, deep down something’s breaking you love your love your love is just like car trouble.

Seems a longer day since I caught on, all the words in grey since I caught on but it’s lovely to see you, but I can’t tell you what I’m dreaming of Dreams don’t mean a thing since I caught on, all the bells still ring since I caught on but it’s lovely to see you Since I caught, since I caught on. It’s in your eyes when you look away in the smile you give as you take away You’ve got a room of your own, and I don’t notice the weather. I want to go the beach, I wanna climb a tree I want to do the things people do for free but even sunshine has its price Since I caught, since I caught on. Seems like you’re more beautiful, seems you’re more beautiful than I remember but women know everything and I can’t tell you what I’m dreaming of. There’s a world I don’t know in the words you don’t say you’ve got a room of your own and I just can’t play and everyone waits in silence Since I caught, since I caught on

I went down to the harbour, it all looked the same no-one enquired as to my business, they all knew my name I looked back to the shoreline, dreamed a little dream of you can’t say I had something better to do And I’m in the bay again, yes I’m in the bay again there’s no need to explain, I’m in the bay again seems like you’re the only thing that’s changed and I’m in the bay again. The cobblestones trash the suspension, I guess that’s part of the charm since I lost my transportation, walking does me no harm Picked out a fish for the fry-pan, didn’t need one big enough for two but if I remember rightly, seafood never suited you And I’m in the bay again, yes I’m in the bay again there’s no need to explain, I’m in the bay again seems like you’re the only thing that’s changed and I’m in the bay again. Went down again in the evening, to catch me a squid off the wall the company was agreeable, I hardly thought of you at all Nobody ventured an opinion, except for Lazy-eye Ed “See you’re in the bay again”, well, that was all he said. And I’m in the bay again, yes I’m in the bay again there’s no need to explain, I’m in the bay again seems like you’re the only thing that’s changed and I’m in the bay again.
